Cardiff Bay At Low Tide

The photograph shows the exit from Cardiff Bay into The Bristol Channel. Taken the day before I planned to set sail, it shows a yacht that has run aground whilst following the buoyed channel inbound on a falling tide. Notice the red port buoy well outside where the deep water is, drifted out of position by the current as the tide fell. There is an 11m tidal range in these parts so the buoys are on long chains with the inevitable result that their position can be tens of metres out at low water. Forwarded, I took care to leave two hours before high tide, even though that necessitated a 4.30 am departure. Without wind, Tramontana's engine powered her along The Bristol Channel. The Island five miles distant is Flat Holm and Penarth pier is the structure on the right.
